Bayeux Tapestry Arrives at British Museum in London

On Friday, July 17, the British Museum in London received the Bayeux Tapestry, a 70-meter-long embroidered cloth depicting the Norman conquest of England. Lord George Osborne, president of the museum, noted the arrival made headlines despite current events like the search for a new prime minister and the FIFA World Cup. French Minister of Culture Catherine Pégard described the event as moving beyond a cordial understanding to a friendly one between France and the United Kingdom.

The tapestry currently rests on a rolling table in the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery, awaiting installation behind custom-built glass. For a brief period, a 3-meter section showcasing the meeting between William the Conqueror and Harold of Wessex was displayed for photographs.

Restorers quickly covered the displayed section with protective fabric. The tapestry’s arrival represents a major cultural exchange between the two nations.
