Why this is here: Karlina Ozolina, a Tokoinranta parkrun co-founder, asked a fellow parkrun participant to review her mortgage documents in Finnish, illustrating the practical benefits of community integration.

Helsinki’s Tokoinranta parkrun and eight other events across Finland provide community and connection for newcomers. Briton Darren Muff found integrating into Finnish society challenging after moving in 2019. He discovered parkrun, a free weekly 5km walk, jog, or run, and began volunteering and socializing.

Parkrun originated in London and now has over 10 million registered participants in more than 20 countries. Researchers at the University of Helsinki found organized sport helps newcomers build social networks. Tokoinranta parkrun hosts over 250 runs annually, attracting thousands of participants.

Organizers emphasize the event's inclusive structure with no fees or performance requirements. Participants often continue socializing over coffee after the run, forming friendships that extend beyond Saturday mornings and providing practical support.
