Why this is here: The “Bird Hour” event demonstrates public engagement with bird conservation, with over 6,500 enthusiasts participating in a single bird-spotting initiative in Poland.

European bird populations have declined by 550 million since the 1980s. A recent bird-watching event, “Bird Hour,” saw over 6,500 participants identify 198,669 birds in Poland. Piotr Kamont, president of a Polish bird protection NGO, noted growing interest in bird watching across the country.

Farmland bird populations have drastically decreased, falling by 58% due to intensive farming practices. Forest bird populations have fared better, declining by only 10% with some stabilization since 2016.

Kamont suggests citizens can support bird populations by creating “lazy gardener’s gardens” with natural, wild spaces. Providing birdhouses, water, and feeders can also offer safe havens for birds.
