Span’s Bid to Monetize Home Electricity Capacity

Span is deploying technology to help homeowners avoid costly electrical service upgrades while simultaneously positioning itself as a key player in grid flexibility and distributed computing. The company’s smart electrical panels, initially focused on backup power and energy management, now enable electrification by intelligently managing energy loads and potentially earning homeowners revenue by hosting small-scale data centers.

A pilot program with PG&E will see Span Edge devices deployed in California homes, while partnerships with homebuilders like PulteGroup aim to integrate the technology into new construction. Span’s long-term vision involves monetizing unused electrical capacity through a program called XFRA, potentially offering customers free energy, backup power, and internet access.
