Zelestra Energizes 1GWh Storage in Chile

Spanish developer Zelestra activated a 1GWh battery energy storage system in the Atacama Desert, Chile. The system forms part of the Aurora hybrid project, which combines energy storage with 220MW of solar power. Zelestra signed a long-term power purchase agreement with gas provider Abastible for the project in March 2025.
China-based Sungrow supplied the PowerTitan 2.0 BESS technology and equipment for the Aurora project. Zelestra’s team handled engineering, procurement, and construction. Financial backing of US$282 million came from Natixis CIB, BNP Paribas, and BCI.
The project’s final commissioning is underway, with full commercial operation expected soon. Other companies are also building battery storage in Chile, including Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Sonnedix. Zelestra has since launched a newer BESS system, the PowerTitan 3.0, claiming it has greater capacity and density.
