Why this is here: The AMPYR Australia project is designed as a grid-forming battery storage system, a technology gaining prominence as Australia transitions away from coal-fired power generation and seeks to bolster grid resilience.

Three battery energy storage projects totaling 5.5GWh have been referred to Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act. The projects are located in Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia, with a combined power output of 1,375MW.

Victoria’s project is a 2GWh BESS connecting to the Moorabool-Mortlake transmission line. AMPYR Australia proposed a 1.5GWh grid-forming BESS in New South Wales, near Bannaby. Revera’s project in South Australia is a staged 2GWh BESS building on existing development approval.

Each project aims to minimize environmental impact. Victoria’s project will disturb 21 hectares of agricultural land.

AMPYR’s BESS will retain ecological areas near St Paul’s Creek. Revera’s project has the smallest footprint at 16.39 hectares and will clear limited vegetation.
