Poland Receives First Electricity From Offshore Wind

Baltic Power, a joint venture between Northland Power and ORLEN, began delivering electricity to Poland’s national grid. The 1.1GW offshore wind farm is located 23 kilometers off the coast near Choczewo and Łeba in the Baltic Sea and represents the first time offshore wind energy has entered the country’s power system.

The project currently has 54 of 76 Vestas 15MW turbines installed across an area of 130km². Baltic Power anticipates generating around 4 terawatt-hours of electricity annually once fully operational, which is enough to power over 1.5 million homes.

The installation is over 80% complete, with all cables laid and offshore substations operational. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, supported by a 25-year contract for difference awarded in 2021. The project aims to reduce Poland’s carbon dioxide emissions by up to 2.8 million tonnes per year.
