OMV to Build Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Plant in Austria

OMV secured a €450m ($512m) loan from the European Investment Bank to build a green hydrogen production facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria. The plant, slated to begin operations by the end of 2027, will utilize a 140MW electrolyser powered by renewable energy and produce up to 23,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually.

The EIB loan will fund roughly 75% of the €600m project, adding to €123m already secured from Austria Wirtschaftsservice. Once completed, the facility will be Austria’s largest and rank among the top five green hydrogen plants in Europe.

OMV intends to transport the hydrogen via a 22km pipeline to its Schwechat refinery near Vienna, replacing fossil-based hydrogen and reducing the refinery’s direct CO₂ emissions by approximately 150,000 tonnes per year, about 10% of current levels. This investment supports OMV’s goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and expanding renewable fuel production to 900 kilotonnes by the end of the decade.
