Perovskite Solar Cells Poised to Lower Solar Costs

Researchers and startups in the US, UK, Japan, and Australia are advancing perovskite solar cell technology, aiming to reduce the cost and broaden the application of solar power. Silicon currently dominates the solar cell market, but perovskite offers potential advantages in cost, efficiency, and manufacturing.

Recent breakthroughs include combining perovskite with silicon in triple-junction cells, achieving efficiencies of 27.06% on small-scale prototypes. A key challenge with early perovskite cells was durability, but new materials like graphene are being used to improve stability.

Companies like Power Roll in the UK are developing lightweight perovskite cells that can be installed on rooftops unable to support heavier silicon panels, roughly 30% of commercial rooftops worldwide. In the US, startups Tandem PV, Swift Solar, and Sofab Inks are scaling up perovskite production, with some partnering with international firms to accelerate deployment. University research programs, like those at the University of Louisville, are providing early support for these ventures.
