Solar & Storage Shatter Records as US Power Needs Rise

Across the United States, solar and storage technologies are rapidly expanding and breaking records for energy generation and grid capacity. In the first quarter of 2026, solar and storage accounted for 91% of all new grid capacity added. For the first time in U.S. history, solar generated more electricity than coal in May 2026, now supplying nearly 13% of the nation’s power.

California and Texas are leading the charge, with California’s batteries discharging almost 13 gigawatts in a single evening and solar covering 72% of afternoon demand. Texas also set four records of its own, including renewables meeting 79% of electricity demand.

Other major grid operators are also achieving record solar generation, demonstrating the technology’s growing importance to grid reliability. These advancements come as electricity demand increases and prices climb, signaling a shift towards cleaner, more affordable energy solutions.
