Long Beach Port Prioritizes Electric Over Hydrogen

The Port of Long Beach in California is investing in electric infrastructure and equipment despite continuing to use the term “zero-emission” which can encompass both electric and hydrogen technologies. While the port previously hosted hydrogen fuel cell trials and infrastructure, recent capital investments are heavily focused on chargers, electrical upgrades, and electric cargo-handling equipment.

This shift isn’t a formal abandonment of hydrogen, as the port continues to permit hydrogen fueling equipment, but a change in where funding is directed. The port is prioritizing solutions with established infrastructure and repeatable procurement processes. A single charger can support multiple machines and builds operational experience, while hydrogen requires a complete system including production, delivery, and fueling infrastructure.

The port’s actions suggest a gradual move towards electrification, prioritizing practical implementation over broad technology declarations. This approach maintains political flexibility while solidifying a clear operational direction, as procurement and infrastructure investments indicate which technologies are moving beyond demonstration projects.
