Balcony Solar Gains Traction in US Despite Grid Challenges

Plug-in solar panels, popular in Europe as “balcony solar,” are becoming increasingly available in the United States. Driven by consumer demand for lower energy bills and recent legislation in over a dozen states, this DIY energy production method allows renters and those without rooftop access to participate in clean energy. However, adapting European products to the U.S. electrical system presents challenges.

Companies like CraftStrom and EcoFlow, experienced in the European market, are modifying their products to meet U.S. safety standards and navigate evolving regulations. UL Solutions began testing full plug-in systems in January, but no complete setup is yet certified, and the National Electric Code update won't fully address the technology until 2029.

Bright Saver, a nonprofit, recently began selling low-cost plug-in systems, quickly selling out its initial inventory. While established rooftop solar companies are hesitant to enter the market, experts anticipate growth from portable solar generator businesses. The key will be bringing German manufacturers to the U.S. to increase competition and lower prices for consumers.
