Kindergartners’ Absences Addressed with Rewards & Support

Schools in Loveland, Colorado are actively working to reduce chronic absenteeism among kindergarteners, a grade nationally known for having the lowest attendance rates. Namaqua Elementary implemented a “Beat the Bell Challenge” where classrooms with the best attendance win a visit from the school’s wildcat mascot, Wyatt. Data from the Thompson School District shows Namaqua reduced chronic kindergarten absenteeism from 35 percent in 2023 to 14 percent in 2026 through strategies like increased family engagement and positive reinforcement.

The district is also focusing on removing barriers to attendance. Cottonwood Plains Elementary created a community resource room stocked with essentials like food, clothing, and diapers, available to families at no cost. These efforts reflect research indicating early interventions are critical, as kindergarten attendance often predicts future school success.

District officials emphasize shifting from punitive measures to supportive communication with families, acknowledging factors like pandemic-related changes in perceptions of school attendance and the unique challenges of starting kindergarten.
