School Builds AI Framework Through Collaboration

Indian Community School in Franklin, Wisconsin, addressed the challenges of rapidly evolving AI tools by forming a “Future Ready Team” of educators and administrators. As the Instructional Technology Coordinator observed increasing teacher anxiety about AI-generated student work, she initiated a collaborative process to develop a school-wide AI framework. The team researched best practices from organizations like ISTE and UNESCO, then curated a policy incorporating guidance from multiple sources including the US Department of Education.

The school prioritized not only establishing rules but also providing professional development for staff and an AI literacy night for families to foster understanding and shared responsibility. This approach moved educators from simply policing AI use to guiding its purposeful application, and built trust with the community. The school’s framework also addresses safeguarding student data and honoring Indigenous Data Sovereignty.

The initiative highlights the importance of building “AI common sense” through ongoing collaboration and shared learning, rather than relying on top-down mandates. The school emphasizes long-term student development and critical thinking skills as central to its approach.
