Hong Kong Teen From Subdivided Flat to Perform in Charity Concert

Yang Qi, a 13-year-old student in Hong Kong, will perform at a Cultural Centre concert with approximately 800 other participants to benefit a poverty-fighting charity. Yang has practiced piano for years in his family’s cramped subdivided flat, where the instrument partially obstructs access to the kitchen and bathroom.

The upcoming October concert aims to raise funds for children lacking resources to pursue their interests. Organisers SoCO note the event builds confidence in young performers and supports a broader mission to address childhood poverty.

SoCO estimates over 200,000 children in Hong Kong live in poverty and around 50,000 Hongkongers under 18 reside in subdivided flats. The concert seeks to alleviate these conditions through fundraising and by providing opportunities for vulnerable youth.
