Family Dining Table Reveals Qing Dynasty Scholar

Xu, a villager in Anhui province, China, discovered his family’s old dining table is actually a Qing dynasty honour board recognizing an ancestor’s academic achievement. The table, a dark-red wooden piece showing decades of wear, bears the carved characters “Gongyuan.” Xu researched the inscription and learned the plaque commemorated his great-great-grandfather, Xu Yunli, for high marks in the provincial imperial examinations.

The family had repurposed the original plaque as a dining table, unaware of its history due to its sturdy timber. The imperial examinations were a key part of the Qing dynasty’s civil service system, used to select officials based on merit.

Xu shared the discovery in a viral video on July 12, sparking interest in his family’s heritage. The table offers a tangible link to a historical system of governance and a family’s contribution to it.
