PEAL Produces Chicken in Bugesera, Rwanda

Poultry East Africa Ltd (PEAL) operates a large poultry facility in Bugesera District, Rwanda, supplying about four tonnes of chicken daily. The company, owned by Singaporean investor Shumei Lam, began operations in 2012 and now employs 130 people directly. It also works with over 450 contract farmers in surrounding communities.

PEAL’s facility is certified under Halal and HACCP standards, ensuring food safety and hygiene. This addresses past consumer skepticism about commercially raised chicken in Rwanda. The company manages a complete production cycle, from hatching chicks to processing meat, allowing for traceability and consistent quality.

Beyond production, PEAL supports local farmers with resources and training. This contract farming model helps families transition to commercial poultry farming and improve their livelihoods.

While the company currently focuses on domestic supply, it plans to expand operations and explore export opportunities. Further investment will be needed to meet growing demand and strengthen Rwanda’s poultry industry.
