Rwanda Trains Teachers to Spot Learning Disabilities Early

More than 4,200 teachers in Rwanda have completed specialized training to better identify and support young learners with disabilities. The Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) initiated the program to address gaps in data collection and a lack of assessment tools within the school system.

Trained educators will work with parents using standardized screening questions to record disability information in a central database. This improved data will allow for more tailored support for students, such as providing Braille or magnifiers based on individual visual impairments, and help development partners direct resources effectively.

A new, specialized curriculum for learners with cognitive and intellectual disabilities is slated to launch in September, replacing the current system with a stage-based approach. The initiative is part of a larger government investment of 24.8 billion Rwandan francs to expand inclusive education and special needs resources through 2029. Experts emphasize that sustained teacher training and community awareness are crucial for the program’s long-term success.
