Bill Gates Visits Rwanda to Examine Health and AI Initiatives

Bill Gates visited Rwanda to observe the country’s advancements in health, artificial intelligence, and digital public infrastructure. The Gates Foundation chair highlighted Rwanda’s health transformation over the past 25 years, praising the government’s investment in and distribution of life-saving technologies.

This visit follows the January announcement of a $50 million partnership between the Gates Foundation and OpenAI to deploy AI-powered healthcare solutions across Africa, beginning with Rwanda’s Horizon 1000 initiative. The program will focus on supporting healthcare workers with AI tools to improve diagnosis, resource allocation, and decision-making in approximately 1,000 primary healthcare clinics by 2028.

Rwanda has significantly reduced childhood deaths since 2000, and has invested in digital health systems like the National Health Intelligence Centre AI Lab and platforms such as E-Ubuzima. Gates noted the country’s effective tracking of health data and proactive approach to improvements.
