Rwanda’s New Truck Driver Training Center Aims to Boost Safety & Trade

In Kigali, Rwanda, the ACPLRWA Vocational Training Centre (VTC) opened on July 15 to provide specialized training for heavy truck drivers. For years, a standard driver’s license was considered sufficient, but the new center addresses a gap between required skills and industry demands.

The curriculum includes instruction in vehicle maintenance, customs procedures, cargo management, customer service, and regional languages like Kiswahili and English. The initiative responds to both a legal requirement, drivers now need a professional certificate in addition to a license, and a need to improve road safety.

Accidents involving heavy trucks are often deadly, and officials hope professional training will reduce crashes caused by human error. The center also aims to improve Rwanda’s position as a regional trade hub.

Efficient freight transport is vital for the landlocked country, and better-trained drivers can minimize delays and reduce costs. The first cohort includes 120 trainees, with 13 coming from neighboring East African nations.
