Why this is here: The deployment of 2,500 community mobilizers highlights a proactive approach to reaching families and ensuring widespread participation in the polio vaccination campaign.

Tanzania’s government began a polio vaccination campaign in the Tabora region on March 24, 2026. The campaign aims to reach over one million children under 10 years old. The initiative seeks to prevent and eradicate polio, a disease causing paralysis.

The launch event took place at Majengo Primary School in Tabora Municipality. Tabora District Commissioner Upendo Wella urged parents and guardians to ensure their eligible children receive the vaccine. Success depends on cooperation from civil society organizations, community groups, and the media to educate citizens about vaccination.

Officials received over 1.5 million doses of polio vaccine from the Ministry of Health. The Tanzania Interfaith Partnership deployed 2,500 mobilizers throughout the region to support the campaign. The campaign’s importance increased after polio virus indicators were found in wastewater samples from Mwanza.
