Tanzania Protects Domestic Workers’ Rights

Usekelege Mpulla, Director of the Commission for Mediation and Arbitration (CMA) in Tanzania, urged domestic workers to recognize their rights and resist exploitation. Speaking in Morogoro on July 18, 2026, Mpulla stated that Tanzanian labor laws protect domestic workers equally to other employees. The CMA is prepared to handle disputes for all workers, prioritizing those in domestic service due to the unique challenges of their work environment.

Many domestic workers in Tanzania face challenges like wage theft, lack of breaks, and poor working conditions, but the CMA exists to enforce their legal protections. The ILO and the Chama cha kutetea watumishi wa hifadhi, majumbani, watoa huduma na wa kwenye mahoteli nchini Tanzania (Chodawu) co-hosted a training session for domestic workers in Morogoro to increase awareness of their rights and responsibilities.

Participants reported a lack of knowledge regarding basic labor rights and the importance of formal employment contracts. Organizers hope to expand this training to reach more domestic workers across the Morogoro region.
