EDO Empowers Young Mothers in Tanzania

Enlighten Development Organization (EDO) is providing skills training and entrepreneurship opportunities to 38 young mothers in the Ifakara Town Council, Morogoro, Tanzania. The organization has been working since 2018 to equip adolescent mothers with skills in tailoring, batik and soap making, vegetable and fruit farming, life skills, mental health, and reproductive health.
EDO connects graduates with microloans offered by the local council to help them start businesses and rebuild their lives after early pregnancies. Over 700 young mothers have benefited from the program to date.
However, EDO and its partner, AKIFRA of Germany, note a continuing challenge in providing the necessary tools and equipment for graduates to immediately apply their new skills. Local officials are supporting the initiative and have donated sewing machines to expand training capacity.
