Mbeya’s Farms Fund New Schools

Local councils in Tanzania’s Mbeya region are using revenue from agricultural commodities to construct schools, expanding access to education and investing in community development. For years, agriculture has underpinned Mbeya’s economy, providing employment and income. Now, councils are diverting profits from crops like avocados, cocoa, tobacco, and pareto to build schools named after those same commodities.

This initiative addresses the challenge of long distances children previously had to travel to attend school, particularly in rural areas. Regional leaders report improved learning environments and student performance, with the region achieving over 90% pass rates on national exams and aiming for 100% in the coming years.

Beyond education, councils are also planning schools funded by gold mining revenue. Residents praise the initiative, noting reduced costs and increased access to education for their children. Other regions in Tanzania are encouraged to replicate this model of locally-funded development.
