Ethiopia’s AI University Could Make It Tech Leader in Africa

Sophia Ashipala, head of the African Union’s Education Division, stated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia that the country’s new Artificial Intelligence University could establish Ethiopia as a continental leader in technology, education, research, and innovation. Ashipala described the university as a landmark initiative and a potential model for other African nations.

She emphasized that this move aligns with the AU’s goals to modernize education systems and prepare youth for technological advancements. However, Ashipala also stressed the importance of strengthening basic education, citing UNESCO and World Bank data showing widespread learning poverty across Africa.

The AU official encouraged other African countries to learn from Ethiopia’s example and invest in AI and higher education. She believes that empowering African institutions to prioritize indigenous knowledge and research is crucial for accelerating innovation and building human capital across the continent.
