Ethiopia Achieves Wheat Self-Sufficiency, Eyes Regional Food Leadership

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo praised Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s wheat self-sufficiency initiative while speaking at Ethiopia’s National Dialogue Conference in Addis Ababa. Obasanjo noted that Ethiopia’s success stemmed from a decision made approximately three years ago to prioritize domestic wheat production. This move addressed vulnerabilities exposed by the Russia-Ukraine war and reduced reliance on imported wheat.

Ethiopia has not only met its own wheat demands but has also begun exporting the crop to neighboring countries. Obasanjo framed this achievement as a significant opportunity for Ethiopia and the wider African continent to enhance food security and economic growth, potentially positioning Ethiopia as a major food supplier.

He emphasized that Ethiopia’s historical strengths, diverse population, and dedicated workforce are crucial for future development, but stressed that national unity and continued dialogue are essential to realize these opportunities and elevate Ethiopia as a leading nation in Africa and the world.
