Addis Ababa Reinvents Itself as Tourist Destination

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is actively reshaping itself from a primarily diplomatic hub to a global destination for tourism and business. For decades, the city served as the political and diplomatic center of Africa, hosting organizations like the African Union.

However, Addis Ababa is now focusing on developing tourism, culture, and urban experiences to attract a wider range of visitors. The city’s corridor development initiative is improving infrastructure and public spaces, making the capital more accessible.

This transformation is already impacting conference tourism, with Addis Ababa hosting 221 international conferences in the last fiscal year, an increase from 150 the previous year. The expansion includes pedestrian walkways, bicycle lanes, and revitalized public spaces, all designed to integrate modern urban living with Ethiopia’s cultural heritage. Addis Ababa aims to diversify its economy and strengthen its position as a competitive African city.
