AU Summit Focuses on Universal Healthcare in Accra

African leaders will convene in Accra, Ghana, this week for an African Union Extraordinary Summit on Health. The 22 July summit follows a Pre-Summit Meeting on 21 July involving ministers, experts, and development partners to formulate recommendations. Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama stated the summit presents a chance to advance a shared agenda for justice, equity, and universal health coverage across the continent.

The summit’s theme centers on ending AIDS and tuberculosis, improving maternal health, and addressing various diseases in Africa. Leaders will review progress on public health challenges and discuss strengthening health systems, local pharmaceutical manufacturing, sustainable financing, and regional cooperation.

The African Union expects participation from Heads of State, health ministers, organizations like Africa CDC, and representatives from civil society and the private sector. The goal is to advance equitable access to healthcare and build resilient systems capable of handling current and future health crises.
