Tanzania Outlines Urban Development Goals To 2036

The Tanzanian government detailed three priorities in New York to accelerate implementation of the New Urban Agenda through 2036. These priorities include expanding access to affordable housing, improving basic urban services, and strengthening local government and community involvement in development. Permanent Secretary Anthony Sanga stated Tanzania has been working to secure land tenure, formalize settlements, and attract investment in housing.

The government is collaborating with organizations like the National Housing Corporation and the Tanzania Buildings Agency to build homes for sale and rent. Sanga noted that secure land tenure, effective administration, and access to finance are crucial for adequate housing.

The New Urban Agenda, adopted at the UN Habitat III conference in 2016 and endorsed by the UN General Assembly, envisions urbanization as a tool for sustainable development. Tanzania’s commitment aims to contribute to this vision and improve living conditions in its urban areas.
