Nairobi to Raise Parking Fees to Sh535 Amid Revenue Push

The Nairobi City County Government plans to increase daily parking fees to at least Sh535 and introduce a time-based tariff system. The new pricing policy, effective 2025 to 2030, aims to better reflect the Sh535 estimated cost of providing parking services. This move seeks to generate higher revenue to cover expenses like road maintenance, attendant salaries, and cleaning services.

Currently, parking in Nairobi costs Sh300 per day, a rate that has remained unchanged for years despite previous attempts to implement zonal pricing and hourly rates. The county government has historically relied on financial acts rather than a unified policy to set fees, leading to inconsistencies.

Parking fees are a major source of revenue for Nairobi County, accounting for 80 percent of total revenue. The county estimates 17,000 parking spaces and hopes the new policy will address a Sh4.0 million daily revenue shortfall. Implementation will likely face resistance from motorists, but the county cites a 2014 High Court ruling that deemed similar rate increases reasonable.
