Vermeer’s Patron: Woman Initiated ‘Girl with a Pearl’ Purchase

In the Netherlands, historians are reassessing the roles of women in art, revealing they were not merely subjects or muses, but also patrons, artists, and vital economic players. Research at the Rijksmuseum and beyond is uncovering the significant contributions of women throughout art history, prompting adjustments to museum displays and art historical narratives. For example, a Jan Steen painting formerly titled “Baker Arent Oostwaard and his wife Catharina Keizerswaard” is now titled “Baker Arent Oostwaard and Catharina Keizerswaard,” acknowledging the wife’s active role in the business.

This shift extends beyond simply renaming works. Historians have discovered that Maria de Knuijt, the wife of art collector Pieter van Ruijven, likely initiated the purchase of approximately half of Johannes Vermeer’s paintings, including “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” This re-evaluation is being implemented through updated museum labels, acquisitions of female artists' work, and new publications.

While progress is being made, challenges remain in ensuring these changes become permanent and aren’t seen as temporary initiatives. The long-term impact hinges on continued funding and a sustained societal interest in recognizing women's historical contributions to the art world.
