MVRDV Wins Design for “Sustainable Icon” in Rotterdam

Dutch architecture firm MVRDV won the design competition for Shift Embassy, a planned “sustainable icon” building in Rotterdam-Zuid, Netherlands. The project, initially called Shift Landmark, aims to be a cultural attraction inspiring ecological and social change through art, stories of sustainable entrepreneurs, and lifestyle tips.

The building will include spaces for rent by companies and organizations, a hotel, a restaurant, and a vertical park. The design, seven stacked “rocks”, underwent revisions following criticism from architects questioning the sustainability of building a new iconic structure.

Concerns centered on the carbon footprint of using materials like steel and concrete, as well as the potential for attracting excessive tourism. Initiator Don Ritzen hopes the building’s impact on visitor behavior will outweigh its construction emissions.

MVRDV emphasizes the use of recycled materials and 3D-printed concrete, aiming to pioneer innovative and sustainable building practices. Construction is slated to begin with an estimated budget of 240 million euros, with planned opening in 2031.
