Dutch Street Transforms Into Summer Holiday Spot

Residents of a street in Tilburg, Netherlands converted their road into a vacation destination for one month, banning cars and erecting communal spaces. The street now features a swimming pool, party tents, seating for many, and a bar, fostering a community atmosphere. Esther van Kempen described the street as a “living room” where residents organize daily activities for all ages.

The initiative, known as a ‘leefstraat’ or living street, allows residents in cities like Utrecht and Amsterdam to apply for temporary road closures to create communal spaces. Tilburg’s Jan van der Leestraat has successfully implemented this for eight years, welcoming not only neighbors but also friends and family.

Activities range from barbecues and workshops to film nights and beer tastings. Residents emphasize the voluntary nature of participation, noting the increased social interaction and mutual support throughout the year. While household chores may suffer, the project strengthens community bonds and creates a unique shared experience.
