Dutch Students Build Solar-Powered Ambulance for Remote Healthcare

Students at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands developed Stella Juva, a fully solar-powered ambulance. The vehicle features solar panels and aims to provide healthcare access to regions with limited fuel and electricity. The ambulance carries medical equipment including an AED and a mobile X-ray machine, potentially aiding in the diagnosis of diseases like tuberculosis, a leading cause of death in many African countries.

The team designed the ambulance not to transport patients to hospitals, but to bring medical care directly to people in remote areas. Twenty-three students paused their studies for a year to build the vehicle, following previous projects including participation in the World Solar Challenge, a 3000+ kilometer solar car race across Australia.

The team will test the Stella Juva in Kenya this August, demonstrating its capabilities to Amref Health Africa. While large-scale production isn’t confirmed, the students hope their work will inspire the industry to explore sustainable healthcare solutions.
