Why this is here: The project will survey residents to determine which scents are associated with culinary traditions and religious rituals, demonstrating a novel approach to preserving cultural identity through olfaction.

Friesland province in the Netherlands began a project today to identify and preserve its scent heritage. The initiative, called “A Nose for Heritage,” aims to document smells associated with the region, from coastal air to farmyard scents. Researchers will survey residents and analyze archives to determine which odors are linked to specific places and traditions.

The project stems from a decision by the BBB party to include “smells and sounds of the Frisian countryside” in the province’s heritage agenda. Researchers hope to highlight the importance of scent in daily life and identity. They will also explore how language reflects changing smells, noting the Frisian term “maitiidsrook” for springtime scents.

The team plans scent walks, smelling sessions, and a “smell library” to gather data. Recreating environmental smells, like those from a stable near the Wadden Sea, presents a unique challenge for perfumers involved in the project.
