Netherlands’ Zwolle Integrates EV Chargers Into Streetlights

In Zwolle, Netherlands, E&CO and AVIA VOLT have activated the first electric vehicle charging points integrated directly into lampposts. The companies installed two smart lampposts with four charging points at the Makersfabriek, an innovation center for technology and energy transition.

This approach avoids the need for separate charging stations, utilizing existing power connections and infrastructure to maximize space and scalability. The technology, developed by CityCharge, is currently being tested in the Netherlands, France, and Germany.

Officials estimate that roughly ten percent of Overijssel province’s 200,000+ lampposts could be equipped with charging points, potentially adding 40,000 charging locations without additional street furniture. The city of Zwolle intends to use the location as a test site to gather data on usability and performance before broader implementation in new residential areas, recreational spaces, and commercial locations.
