B Corp Marks 20 Years of Impact

B Lab celebrates its 20th anniversary in over 104 countries, originating from a group of 81 companies in 2006. The organization now certifies more than 10,700 B Corporations employing over one million people. Initially considered radical, the idea of businesses prioritizing all stakeholders—not just shareholders—has gained traction, with benefit corporation legislation adopted in 51 jurisdictions globally.

Research from B Lab’s Impact Report suggests that if all companies adopted environmental practices at the rate of B Corps, global temperature increases could be reduced by 0.5°C by 2100. Separate research shows over 95% of B Corps continued operations during COVID-19, compared to 88% of similar companies.

The B Corp community is evolving, experimenting with models like including nature on boards and reconsidering ownership structures. While the movement has expanded significantly, challenges remain in deepening commitment to certification standards and scaling the model for broader impact. The work of defining responsible, future-proof business continues.
