Dutch Firm Cuts Industrial Pump Power Use

Zytec, a Dutch industrial technology company, is helping businesses significantly reduce electricity consumption with its contactless magnetic coupling technology for industrial pumps. The company’s system optimizes pump speed, addressing a common issue where pumps operate with excess capacity, more than 100,000 pumps above 10 kilowatt operate in the Netherlands alone.

Zytec estimates its technology can unlock 2.7 gigawatts of power on the Dutch electricity grid and save nearly 4 terawatt-hours annually, over 3 percent of the country’s total electricity use. This reduction could also prevent 1 million tons of CO2 emissions each year, earning Zytec the Transition Award 2026 in the Energy category.

The company developed its technology, originally based on US designs, to improve “rotating equipment” like pumps and fans. By eliminating physical contact between the motor and pump, Zytec’s coupling reduces wear, lowers maintenance costs, and extends equipment life. Businesses often see a return on investment within two to three years, and sometimes even faster when factoring in reduced maintenance.
