Why this is here: The research highlights that deforestation isn’t limited to exported commodities; a large portion stems from agricultural production for local markets.

Swedish researchers found agriculture drives over 70% of global deforestation. A new report analyzed satellite data from 2001 to 2022. It examined the impact of over 180 crops on forest loss.

Livestock production remains the largest driver of deforestation worldwide. Soy, used for animal feed, also contributes significantly to forest clearing. Palm oil, cocoa, and coffee are frequently cited as causes of deforestation.

The study revealed that staple crops like cassava, corn, and rice play a larger role in deforestation than previously understood. These crops receive less attention in monitoring programs compared to coffee and cocoa.

Over 80% of the 122 million hectares deforested for agriculture were in tropical regions. Researchers hope findings will guide action by companies and governments.
