Sodium-Ion Batteries Expand Energy Storage Options in Europe

Alfen, a Dutch energy infrastructure supplier, announced on Thursday it will bring sodium-ion batteries to Europe for both large-scale storage and home use. The batteries present an alternative to the dominant lithium-ion technology as demand grows for energy storage solutions accompanying increased wind and solar power generation.

Sodium-ion batteries offer advantages over lithium-ion in terms of safety and resource criticality. They utilize sodium, a more abundant element, reducing reliance on materials with complex supply chains.

The introduction of this technology aims to diversify energy storage options and potentially lower costs. Alfen intends to integrate these batteries into its existing energy infrastructure solutions. Further deployment will depend on scaling production and demonstrating long-term performance.
