Ukraine’s Energy Defense: A Model for Global Security

Ukraine successfully defended its energy system against intense Russian attacks last winter, preventing a collapse many predicted. For years, Ukraine built a resilient energy infrastructure by layering defenses, intercepting long-range missiles, engaging drones with mobile units, and using electronic warfare.

Beyond active defense, Ukraine fortified critical facilities with blast walls and decentralized power generation through modular turbines and microgrids. Ukrainian engineers rapidly restored four gigawatts of generating capacity after Russia destroyed nine gigawatts, aided by pre-positioned spare parts and coordinated response teams.

This success prompted Gulf countries to sign defense cooperation agreements with Ukraine and explore purchasing Ukrainian drone interceptors. Ukraine is now transitioning from aid recipient to security provider, offering training programs to partner countries. The United States and Europe face similar threats, recent Iranian plots against California targets and Russian surveillance of European energy assets, and should adopt Ukraine’s comprehensive approach to energy security.
