CT Scans Reveal Details of 2,300-Year-Old Mummies

At Semmelweis University in Hungary, archaeologists are using CT scans to examine Egyptian mummies. The medical department’s scans employ a special imaging technology to analyze complex, layered materials. Researchers hope to precisely map the internal structure of the remains, identify anomalies, and understand ancient conservation techniques.

The high-resolution scans allow for detailed study of teeth and skulls from two mummified heads. This detailed examination may enable more accurate age estimations and potentially, facial reconstructions. Museum curators at Hungary’s National Museum welcome the technology, as previous research teams lacked this level of detail.

Currently, a detailed analysis of the scan images is underway. While the scans offer unprecedented views, researchers acknowledge that further data analysis is needed to fully understand the mummies’ lives, health, and the specifics of their mummification.
