Krásný Dvůr Castle Exhibits Count’s Influential Journey

Krásný Dvůr Castle in the Lounsko region of the Czech Republic opened a new exhibit detailing how Count Jan Rudolf Černín’s grand tour of Europe from 1779 to 1781 shaped the castle grounds. The exhibit explores the tradition of aristocrats undertaking educational journeys across Europe to gain experience in diplomacy and governance.

Černín visited Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, gathering ideas for landscaping and park design. Upon his return, he transformed former game preserves into one of the first natural landscape parks in the Czech lands.

The exhibit displays items from the period, including luxurious sedan chairs and whale-shaped sleighs. Curators emphasize that Černín didn’t simply copy European styles but formed his own opinions and applied them to the design of Krásný Dvůr, building structures like Pan’s Temple and the Gloriet viewing pavilion. The castle hopes the exhibit will demonstrate the direct link between travel, taste, and the creation of a unique cultural landscape.
