NYC Mayor Seeks Disclosure of AI-Altered Rental Listings

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is proposing rules to require landlords and realtors to disclose when they use artificial intelligence to alter images in rental listings. The move follows a “Rental Ripoff Report” outlining recommendations to address deceptive practices. The report stems from Rental Ripoff Hearings where Mamdani’s office collected feedback from 2,400 New Yorkers about issues with their housing.

The administration believes undisclosed AI-generated or edited images mislead potential tenants, particularly those signing leases remotely for new jobs. The report also recommends recognizing tenant unions and expanding tenant bargaining rights as part of a broader effort to improve housing conditions.

Mamdani’s office frames the initiative as a step toward accountability for landlords and ensuring safe housing for all New Yorkers. The city will now focus on implementing these recommendations and modernizing code enforcement systems.
