CDL Expands Microforest Project in Singapore

Why this is here: Data from NUS researchers revealed that CDL’s microforest experienced temperatures up to 5°C lower than nearby roadside areas at midday, demonstrating a measurable cooling effect within the urban environment.
City Developments Limited (CDL) is expanding its microforest project in Singapore. The real estate firm will double the size of an existing 260 square meter “microforest” at City Square Mall. CDL also identified two additional sites for new microforests over the next one to two years.
The company partnered with botanists from the National University of Singapore and the National Parks Board for this urban cooling initiative. CDL aims to integrate greenery into urban areas to support Singapore’s climate adaptation goals. They have applied for funding from the S$50 million SG Eco Fund to scale the project.
Researchers at NUS found CDL’s microforest recorded temperatures up to 5°C lower than surrounding areas. Acoustic monitoring also detected increased bird call activity and greater species richness within the microforest compared to a nearby grass patch.
