US Heat Pump Sales Surge, Challenging Gas Furnaces

Across the United States, heat pump sales are increasing and recently surpassed shipments of fossil fuel furnaces by 32 percent in the first quarter of this year. A report from the Building Decarbonization Coalition indicates heat pump sales have doubled over the last 15 years, with 46 percent of new housing incorporating the technology in 2024.

This growth is particularly notable in new apartment construction, where three-quarters are already heated electrically, making heat pumps a logical next step. Utilities are also exploring networked geothermal systems, which use the earth's consistent temperature to further boost efficiency, potentially seven to eight times that of gas furnaces.

The shift towards heat pumps comes as consumers become more aware of energy costs and the systems that determine them, alongside growing demand for decarbonization. This trend could reduce the need for expanded electrical infrastructure as overall electricity use rises due to factors like data centers and electric vehicles.
