Asia-Pacific Plans $50B Grid to Power AI Boom

The Asian Development Bank is spearheading a $50 billion initiative to build a Pan-Asia Power Grid, aiming to connect electricity grids across Asia and the Pacific to meet the surging demand from artificial intelligence development, semiconductor manufacturing, and digital economies. The project, slated for completion by 2035, will also include a $20 billion Asia-Pacific Digital Highway to support the expanded network.

ADB anticipates the grid will integrate 20 gigawatts of renewable energy, construct 22,000 circuit-kilometers of transmission lines, and improve electricity access for 200 million people. The effort reflects a growing recognition that isolated national power systems cannot sustain the escalating energy needs of data centers and advanced manufacturing.

However, the plan faces criticism from climate organizations who argue that regional integration alone isn’t enough and that the ADB must accelerate a transition to renewables and protect affected communities. The success of projects like the proposed Pax Silica AI hub in the Philippines will depend on securing this reliable, low-carbon electricity.
