China Ships Hundreds of Electric Trucks, Threatening Diesel Demand

SANY Truck shipped 883 battery-electric heavy trucks through Guangzhou Port in late June, marking the largest single export of Chinese new-energy tractor trucks on record. This shipment surpasses the entire 2025 export total for the industry, signaling a shift from domestic experimentation to an export-driven industry for electric heavy trucks. China aims for new-energy commercial vehicles to comprise 25% of its fleet by 2030, with a plan to have over 1.6 million new-energy heavy-duty trucks on its roads.

Recent sales data indicates a strong trend toward electrification, with new-energy heavy truck sales rising roughly 45% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, despite a temporary dip. China’s approach emphasizes regional industrial clusters, like the manufacturing and export corridor linking Changsha and Guangzhou, to accelerate production and scale.

Analysts estimate ownership costs for these electric trucks are now comparable to diesel vehicles at around 500,000 yuan per truck. This move toward electric freight could significantly impact global diesel demand and reshape the future of the oil industry.
