Philippines Inaugurates World’s Largest Solar & Battery Facility

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. inaugurated the first phase of the MTerra Solar project in Gapan City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, marking a major step in the country’s clean energy transition. The facility, expected to become the world’s largest integrated solar and battery energy storage facility, currently generates 1,373 megawatts of photovoltaic power alongside 825 megawatts of battery storage.

Currently, power exports to the Luzon grid are limited to 750 MW while transmission upgrades continue. Once completed, MTerra is projected to reach 3.5 GW of solar generation paired with 4.5 GWh of battery storage.

MGEN, the project developer, anticipates the facility will deliver approximately $400 million in economic value over the next decade through tax revenues and job creation. The project addresses the Philippines’ reliance on imported fossil fuels by providing a dispatchable renewable energy source and strengthening grid stability. Phase I is 91 percent complete and expected to be fully operational by August 2026, with Phase II scheduled for completion in 2027.
