Taiwan Support for Same-Sex Marriage Rises

Why this is here: Support for gender equality education in Taiwan has increased by 21 percentage points over the past seven years, reaching a record high of 75 percent.

The Taiwan Equality Campaign released a survey yesterday showing 54.3% of Taiwanese people now support same-sex marriage. This marks a 12 percentage point increase since the law legalized it seven years ago. Support for transnational same-sex marriage reached 63% and joint child adoption by same-sex couples is favored by 67.2% of respondents.

The survey also revealed record high support—75%—for gender equality education, increasing 21 percentage points in the last seven years. Nearly 60% of people support allowing same-sex female couples access to assisted reproductive technology, currently limited to heterosexual couples. The TEC is urging lawmakers to amend the Assisted Reproduction Act to include all couples.

Young women show a preference for working at LGBTQ+-friendly companies, with 55% of those aged 18 to 29 stating they would be more likely to apply. While younger generations express support in polls, the TEC notes they often only strongly mobilize when facing opposition. Trend Polls conducted the survey in April, interviewing 1,077 adults with a margin of error of 2.98 percentage points.
